working hands

This week the verse Ecclesiastes 9:10 was brought to my attention in this super cute vintage artwork. “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might…” So it got me to thinking this morning about my hands. I started thinking how much I work with my hands in crafting jewelry, bags, clothing, etc. I sew with them. I twist metal with them. I model new pieces. I use them to layout new designs and samples.

Then I began to think about my ancestors, my grandparents specifically, and how they used their hands. My grandfather’s hands were like worn leather. He was an automotive upholsterer. My grandmother’s hands were soft, but her fingers were knotted at the knuckles from years of sewing and crafting. My mother’s hands are wonderfully soft, but she has very short nails from years of destroying them while doing furniture upholstery. My dad’s hands were large and rough like sandpaper but oh so gentle and sweet. He was a master electrician and a farmer. Hands are very special and tell a lot about a person- their line of work, their age, their history so to speak. So whatever your hand finds to do today, do it with all your might!
